Gary Payton's signature shoe was one of the most visually distinctive basketball shoes of the late 1990s not because of its color or material but because of its closure system: a front zipper replaced the traditional lacing entirely, wrapping the foot in a seamless, glove-like fit that gave the shoe its name and gave Payton the lockdown his relentless defensive game demanded. The zippered shroud construction begins at the toe and runs the full length of the upper, pulling closed over an inner bootie that provides the snug sock-like contact with the foot — the same construction logic the Air Flightposite used in 1999, earlier applied here to the Zoom Flight '98 platform.
