Designed by Wilson Smith III — not Tinker Hatfield — and debuted in 2001 as MJ's first Washington Wizards-era signature shoe, the AJ16 arrived at one of the most emotionally charged chapters in Jordan's career: a 38-year-old coming out of his second retirement to prove he could still play at the highest level, averaging over 22 points per game in his first Wizards season while wearing a shoe that nobody expected to become a collector piece. The construction is the most material-contrasted in the entire series. A black patent leather upper covers the AJ16's primary panels with a high-gloss, lacquered surface that catches light with the kind of sharp reflectivity that patent leather alone delivers — deep, liquid, and unmistakably premium. Against it, black suede overlays land on the toe box, midfoot panels, and heel in a dense, matte finish that absorbs light rather than reflecting it — the contrast between the two black surfaces creating a material tension across the shoe's profile that reads with luxury depth rather than simple color contrast. The AJ16's most distinctive and most debated feature — the removable shroud — is executed in matching black patent leather, its zip-away construction converting the shoe between a covered high-top silhouette and an exposed low-top configuration in a single motion. Worn zipped, the shroud creates an unbroken blacked-out surface from ankle to toe. Worn open, the internal lacing system, padded collar, and shoe architecture beneath are fully revealed.
