The Air Jordan 12 “Melo” returns a colorway whose nickname comes from Carmelo Anthony’s early years with Jordan Brand, even though its White and University Blue palette naturally traces back to Michael Jordan’s University of North Carolina roots. White tumbled leather covers the AJ12’s radiating stitched upper, while University Blue takes over the pebbled leather mudguard, outsole, heel branding, and supporting accents. Metallic Silver finishes the upper eyelets, keeping the retail version close to the 2004 release that became associated with Melo during his Denver Nuggets era. Anthony’s actual player-exclusive version pushed the connection further with “MELO” embroidery at the heel and Gold-tinted hardware, but the public pair stripped away those PE identifiers while retaining the same Powder Blue-inspired look. That association arrived at exactly the right moment: Carmelo had entered the NBA as one of its most anticipated young stars, joined Jordan Brand early, and played for a Denver team whose powder-blue uniforms made the colorway feel purpose-built for him. The AJ12 itself carries championship pedigree from Michael Jordan’s 1996-97 season, but “Melo” belongs to the next generation of Jordan athletes. Its first retro in more than two decades therefore restores more than a clean UNC-adjacent palette - it brings back an early example of Jordan Brand using Michael’s signature line to build another superstar’s identity.
