The Air Jordan 12 Retro "Obsidian" is the 30th anniversary return of the most quietly respected colorway in the AJ12's original five-pair 1997 lineup — the only OG Air Jordan 12 colorway that Michael Jordan never wore on court, and the one that built its reputation entirely through its palette's power rather than through any game-defining moment it was present for. The AJ12 debuted in 1997 during Jordan's fifth championship season with the Chicago Bulls, arriving alongside the "Flu Game," "Taxi," "Cherry," and "Playoffs" colorways in one of the most celebrated single-season signature shoe launches in the Jordan catalog. The "Obsidian" occupied a distinct position within that original five: while the other colorways referenced the Bulls' red-and-black identity directly or through obvious color associations, the Obsidian used a deep navy, French Blue, University Blue, and White combination that had no relationship to Jordan's professional uniform — a palette that collectors have consistently and unofficially connected to Jordan's alma mater at the University of North Carolina, where he wore Carolina Blue on his way to becoming the player the Chicago Bulls would eventually draft. The "Obsidian" received its only previous retro in 2012, a release that landed with mixed reviews among collectors specifically because its shape diverged noticeably from the 1997 original — making the 2027 retro carry additional significance: multiple confirmed sources report the 2027 version features an improved shape more faithful to the 1997 construction, giving the colorway the proper retro treatment it has been due for fifteen years. Tinker Hatfield's Air Jordan 12 construction is built around a full-grain leather upper with the signature crosshatch stitching pattern that runs the lateral vamp — the intricate woven stitch work that gives the AJ12 its most immediately recognizable surface texture — and a carbon fiber shank plate embedded in the full-length Zoom Air midsole, the first Air Jordan signature shoe to carry full-length Zoom Air cushioning when it debuted in 1997. Obsidian covers the primary leather panels in the deep, slightly warm navy — the darkest and most jewel-toned blue in Nike's standard color vocabulary — while French Blue and University Blue land across the outsole and selected midsole accents in the two distinct lighter blue tones that give the colorway its depth within a single color family.
