The Air Jordan 17 Retro DB x Zach Rumbaugh "Doernbecher" is the first Air Jordan 17 ever to appear in the Doernbecher Freestyle program - a milestone for a silhouette that has spent most of its post-2002 existence as one of the most desired and least retroed models in the Jordan catalog - and the most mechanically and personally specific design in the Doernbecher Freestyle 21 collection. Zach Rumbaugh is an 18-year-old from Salem, Oregon, diagnosed with catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia - a rare genetic heart condition that caused a sudden cardiac arrest when he jumped into a pool. He spent 38 days recovering at OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital, and every construction and design decision on this shoe traces back to that number and to his passion for automotive engineering and custom vehicles. The upper is built from a color-shifting violet leather that mimics custom automotive paint - the purple finish changing register between deep grape, royal blue, and metallic violet depending on light angle and proximity, a visual effect drawn directly from the iridescent custom car wraps Zach studies and works with. An iridescent heel clip simulates the thermal coloration of titanium exhaust pipes, the specific automotive detail he cited as his design anchor. The AJ17's signature removable shroud returns in matching finish, with "Team Zach Rumbaugh" and Doernbecher Freestyle text under the left tongue and a Jumpman under the right. Carbon fiber-style panels wrap the sides, and Metallic Silver details run the collar and midsole accents. The number 38 appears on the lace lock, hangtag, insoles, and heel - each placement a reference to the days Zach spent in recovery. A heart emblem on the lace lock promotes CPR awareness, honoring the medical team that saved his life. Custom lace dubraes - featuring a Jumpman, baseball, "23," "38," and a miniature AJ17 silhouette - run the full lace system, and a glow-in-the-dark rubber outsole activates in low light. Vietnamese heritage graphics appear on the insoles, and a cat graphic stamps the toe box as a nod to Zach's love of cats. All proceeds from this release support OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
