The Nike Air Max 90 "Infrared" is the 2026 iteration of the most historically significant Air Max colorway ever produced - the original palette Tinker Hatfield applied when the shoe debuted in 1990 as the Air Max III, the release that proved visible Air cushioning could be a design statement rather than purely a performance specification. The 2026 build is not a standard OG retro - confirmed across multiple sources - but a material-updated version that retains the "Infrared" color story while introducing 3M reflective technology to the construction in zones that the original 1990 and 2020 anniversary releases used mesh. White smooth leather covers the primary upper base panels, and Light Smoke Grey suede replaces the standard mesh at the toe cap and side panel overlays, providing a premium matte surface material with more texture and depth than the flat mesh it replaces. Dark grey 3M reflective synthetic panels land on the collar and heel zones - the key substitution from previous Infrared retros - activating in low light and camera flash to give the shoe's most peripheral surfaces a reflective transformation absent from every prior Infrared Air Max 90 release. Infrared 23 carries through the eyelets, tongue branding, lateral "Air Max" callouts, lower lace protection panels, heel branding, and the midsole cutout surrounding the visible Air unit - the bright crimson appearing in every zone where it has always appeared, with all color relationships intact from the original 1990 design. Particle Grey and Black balance the palette at the midsole borders and outsole, and the white midsole carries the visible Air unit in its original exposed position.
