The Nike Kobe 8 Protro "Shanghai Fireworks" is one of the most sought-after China-exclusive Kobe colorways ever produced — and Holiday 2026 marks the first time in its 13-year existence that it will release globally. Originally dropping September 1, 2013 as a China-only release tied directly to Kobe Bryant's Nike Tour through Shanghai, the "Shanghai Fireworks" has spent over a decade commanding four-figure resale prices on the rare occasions a pair surfaces outside its home market — with a brand new pair selling for $1,500 on eBay as recently as 2025. The shoe was born out of Nike's Kobe 8 System era, when the brand was pushing graphical boundaries across the entire performance basketball catalog, and the "Fireworks" took that boldness further than almost anything else in the lineup: an all-over photorealistic fireworks print applied directly to the lightweight engineered mesh upper, covering every panel of the shoe in the explosive streaks, bursts, and halos of a Shanghai night sky. When Kobe wore them courtside in Shanghai that August, the shoes were as much an event as the tour itself.

The graphic construction is what defines this shoe completely — and the Protro build preserves every element of it intact. Laser Orange, Cinnabar Red, Safety Orange, and white streak across the engineered mesh upper in overlapping arcs that mimic the chaos and color of fireworks mid-explosion, the print shifting and recomposing as the shoe moves. Bright Laser Orange laces and a patent leather heel tab carry the warmest tone in the palette to the most structural zones of the upper, while a red sock liner and red Kobe signature at the lateral heel stabilizer thread the color from the inside of the shoe to the outside. Black Swooshes on the side panels ground the explosive upper with the silhouette's only dark anchor, and the Kobe sheath logo appears twice — on the tongue in standard form and spread across the entire heel panel as a graphic watermark — a dual branding treatment that reinforces the shoe's identity from every angle. The Mamba logo on the tongue incorporates its own fireworks graphic, embedding the pattern into the branding itself rather than treating it as surface decoration. Beneath all of it: a translucent blue outsole that shifts the palette entirely at the ground — an unexpected final detail that makes the shoe look completely different from below.
