The Air Jordan 9 Retro “Cool Grey” brings back the celebrated 2002 colorway with a distinction no original 1993 AJ9 can claim: it was the only Air Jordan 9 Michael Jordan actually wore in an NBA game. Jordan had stepped away from basketball to pursue baseball when the AJ9 originally launched, meaning the silhouette never appeared on his feet during his first Chicago Bulls run. Nearly a decade later, during his Washington Wizards comeback, MJ finally brought the model onto an NBA court in the Cool Grey colorway. The design uses Medium Grey nubuck through the upper, wrapped by glossy Cool Grey patent leather around the mudguard and heel - a material combination that gives the otherwise monochromatic shoe dramatically different finishes depending on the light. White appears through the laces, tongue branding, embroidered heel “23,” and midsole, while a translucent outsole preserves the icy look associated with the 2002 pair. The 2025 edition marks only the third retail appearance of the colorway, following the original and a 2012 retro, making its return considerably less common than many familiar Jordan classics. “Cool Grey” itself has become one of Jordan Brand’s defining non-OG palettes, but on the AJ9 it carries something more valuable than color alone: an actual Michael Jordan on-court connection that the model’s original releases never received.
