Union LA’s “Chicago Shadow” returns to the cut-and-stitch Frankenstein construction that made the boutique’s 2018 Air Jordan 1 collaborations instant classics. Chris Gibbs originally developed numerous mismatched OG-colorway combinations for that first project, and Chicago/Shadow was among the concepts that never made the original release. Seven years later, Union finally brought it to production. The lower portion channels the legendary “Chicago” with White, Varsity Red, and Black leather, while the collar abruptly switches into the Grey-and-Black language of the original “Shadow.” Exposed zigzag stitching physically joins the two sections, creating the appearance of two vintage AJ1s cut apart and reconstructed into one pair. A pre-aged Sail midsole and deliberately vintage-minded finishing reinforce the flea-market/customized inspiration behind Union’s original concept, while the UN/LA tag sits beside the Swoosh as the collaboration’s understated signature. Union introduced the project with “I’m Back” messaging, referencing Michael Jordan’s famously concise 1995 return-to-basketball announcement while simultaneously announcing Union’s own return to the AJ1 High. Unlike a collaboration that invents a new palette from scratch, “Chicago Shadow” works because both halves are instantly recognizable pieces of Jordan history - and because the combination had existed in Gibbs’ original design process long before collectors finally got the chance to own it.
