The Nike Air Bakin "Varsity Red" is the most historically documented colorway in one of Nike Basketball's most layered silhouettes — a shoe designed by Eric Avar in 1997, debuted on the hardwood by Miami Heat point guard Tim Hardaway, and immediately entangled in controversy that made it famous before most buyers had ever held a pair. Nike's original 1997 Air Bakin launch was recalled after the Council on American-Islamic Relations raised objections to the heel's "Air" script branding, which bore a resemblance to the word "Allah" in Arabic when viewed from a specific angle — one of the most documented brand controversies of the decade, and the reason the "Air" branding on every Air Bakin since has used a revised script. The 2026 retro returns the colorway to the OG Varsity Red/White/Varsity Maize/Black palette that Hardaway wore during his Heat years, with the revised Nike Air branding that has been the standard since the original recall. Varsity Red covers the full upper's dramatically wavy cage construction — the Air Bakin's most distinctive design element, its molded polyurethane upper panels cut with deep horizontal slits that expose black mesh beneath, giving the shoe a layered, almost sculptural surface character that no other Nike Basketball silhouette from the era shares. White trim runs the structural borders and midsole, Varsity Maize hits the secondary accents with the yellow that gives the colorway its fire-inspired identity, and black carries through the outsole and inner structure.
