The Nike Air Max Plus DB x Sergio Cano Marquez "Doernbecher" is part of the 21st Doernbecher Freestyle Collection — Nike's annual collaboration with Oregon Health & Science University Doernbecher Children's Hospital, which has raised over $40 million for pediatric care since 2004 by giving young patients the opportunity to design their own Nike and Jordan Brand silhouettes. Sergio Cano Marquez is an 11-year-old from Portland, Oregon, born with mucopolysaccharidosis type IV A, a rare genetic condition affecting skeletal development — and he approached the Air Max Plus with the same confidence and creative energy the program is built around. The design is structured as a deliberately mismatched pair: the right shoe and left shoe tell completely different stories. The right shoe is built on a black base and dedicated entirely to Sergio's love of gaming and drawing — a video game-infused execution with controller graphics, Tetris-style patterns, and pixel-inspired detailing running the upper panels, the word "Sergio" embroidered at the heel confirming its personal authorship. The left shoe shifts to a white base and a completely different world: cartoon monster lizards devouring pizza against a vivid New York City skyline wrap the upper in the kind of scene-setting graphic illustration that Sergio draws himself. Both shoes share a basketball-textured tongue in orange — a nod to his love of the sport — and pizza graphics on the sock liner, the one interior detail that connects both shoes' stories. "MPS" appears on the heel opposite "Sergio," embedding his diagnosis into the design without making it the subject of it. The outsoles glow in the dark in mismatched colors, and a special edition shoebox completes the release.
