The "Orca" name references the killer whale's specific black-and-white color pattern — a connection to the Kobe brand's Mamba identity that links the Black Mamba snake to the ocean's apex predator through shared colorway DNA rather than any literal biological connection. The Kobe 3 Low Protro was debuted in 2026 as the first low-cut treatment of the Kobe 3 silhouette — a shoe that originally released as a high-top in 2008, with Kobe Bryant specifically choosing its diamond-lattice TPU cage construction for the ankle containment he preferred during his game's most dominant phase. The low-cut format removes the upper portion of the original high-top collar, transforming the Kobe 3's silhouette into a lifestyle-adjacent basketball shoe while preserving the lattice cage's geometric construction across the side panels. A black upper covers the full primary surface — plush black leather on the toe box and heel, black lattice-style TPU netting across the side panels — in the near-total dark execution the Orca colorway name describes.
