The fifteen-year gap between 2012 and 2027 is the longest the colorway has gone unretroduced since the silhouette launched. The "Raptors" nickname is one of the most widely cited misnomers in sneaker history: the colorway was created in 1992 as one of the AJ7's five OG launch options in a Black, True Red, and Eggplant colorway combination, and the Toronto Raptors franchise would not exist for another three years. The resemblance between the palette and the expansion team's early uniform colors, combined with the close timeline, produced the "Raptors" association permanently despite no actual connection between the shoe and the team. The official name is "Playoffs" — referencing Michael Jordan's 1992 postseason in which he wore this colorway en route to his second consecutive NBA championship, including Game 1 of the 1992 NBA Finals against Portland where he hit six three-pointers in the first half before his famous "Shrug."
